Rebellion
For this project we had to create a podcast talking to a character from our independent reading for the project i choose Holden Caulfield from Catcher in the Rye J.D. Salinger.
Script:
Why do you not care for Pencey?
A: They don't do any damn molding at pencey than they do at other schools. (PG 2)The molding they
do is about the same, but they make a higher mold. It’s all part of playing the game. The more
expensive a school is, the more crooks it has in it" (chapter 22)
Holden you are now leaving your fourth school. Why don’t you play the game like everyone else?
A: Game my ass, Some game. If you get on the side where all the hot shots are, then it's a game
where all the hot shots are then it's a game , all right-I'll admit that But if you are on the other side
where there aren't any hot shots then what a game about it. (PG 4)
I keep hearing how you think everyone is boring. Why is that?
A: it is sort of depressing because I keep wondering what the hell would happen to all of them
(the girls) when they get out of school and college I mean you figured most of them would be with
dopey guys that always talk about how many miles they get to a gallon in their goddam cars
Guys that get sore and childish as hell if you beat them at golf or some stupid game like ping pong
Guys that never read books guys that are very boring.
What are running away from?
A: Pg 130 Did you ever get fed up mean did you ever get scared that everything was going to go lousy
unless you did something
Are you worried about the Korean War? Do you think that you will be drafted into the war when you
reach 18?
I am not even thinking at all about that. I thinking about the girls that I am going meet up with when
get to New York. I keep thinking Sally Hayes and Jane Gallagher.
It seems that you are rebelling. Why?
I’m not rebelling I just don’t think anyone should be a phony like my brother DB. He sold out and
went to Hollywood.
You seem to have difficulties with relationships. Why do you think you are having a hard time
connecting to others?
I can’t find any one intelligent that I can hold as conversation with. I tried talking to some 30 year olds,
but all they cared about was celebrities.
Is that why you keep carrying around that baseball mitt? My Allie was the only one I could really talk to.
He died.
Why do you prefer the chaos of downtown instead of the tranquility of the suburbs?
Boring.
What’s boring?
The people are boring and phonies.
Script:
Intro: WWII has ended and the veterans come home many seek success through higher education because of the GI bill Additionally NATO is created because of the tension with West Europe & America and the USSR. The tension created Mccarthyism or the campaign to root out communism in the country. The end of WWII led to the post war economic and baby boom, and conformity of the nuclear family that Holden is a product. But when there is conformity there is rebellion. For every tradition shared by the populous there will be someone spitting in the face of it. This leads us to Caulfield, Holden a 16 year old drop out. A child who has been given a future and rejects it. He attended Pencey Prep, a boarding school in Agerstown, Pennsylvania in the 1950's until he was kicked out for his lacking grades. Soon after hearing the news he travels to his home in New York City but doesn't decide to stay in a hotel before returning home to enjoy his time before he explains his circumstances to his parents.
